Nickname shortening

Post by Juno » Thu Nov 25, 2010 12:51 am

It would be nice if a feature to shorten too long nicknames was added, be it by cutting it to a specified length (1) or by substituting specific ones with shorter aliases (2).

Example:

(1) <ThisNicknameTakesTooMuchLineSpace> Hello
... could be shown as...
<ThisNick> Hello

(2) <ThisNicknameTakesTooMuchLineSpace> Hello
... could be shown as...
<SoLong> Hello

Thanks for your hard work.

Another suggestion

When an user sends two or more consecutive messages, keep from showing the user's nickname.

Example:

<TriggerHappy> Hello
<TriggerHappy> How are things there?
<TriggerHappy> Not much around here.
<AnotherUser> It's been quite normal today.

... could be shown as...

<TriggerHappy> Hello
How are things there?
Not much around here.
<AnotherUser> It's been quite normal today.

I know both the previous and this current request sound like something out of an IM application, but I honestly think they help to ease the eyes and unclutter the screen.

I might implement optional nickname shortening by replacing some characters with an elipsis if the nickname is longer than a given amount of pixels but this is a minor feature so has low priority.

Your second idea I am not so keen on as it would not look right if timestamps were being displayed or if the first line of the conversation is removed from the top of the buffer when the buffer is full.
